Marketo vs Salesforce Marketing Cloud: Which Is Better for B2B Teams Already on Salesforce?

If your sales team already lives in Sales Cloud, the first snag in the Marketo vs Salesforce Marketing Cloud decision is naming, because Salesforce uses “Marketing Cloud” for several different products. For B2B marketing automation, the product to hold up against Marketo Engage is Marketing Cloud Account Engagement, the tool Salesforce used to call Pardot, and newer Salesforce marketing customers will also hear about Marketing Cloud Next.

The real gap between them shows up in how your data moves. Marketo keeps its own database of people and syncs it with Salesforce in short cycles, pausing 5 minutes between them, while Account Engagement links each prospect to a Salesforce lead or contact and lets you decide, field by field, which system’s value wins. Pricing works differently too: Salesforce publishes its prices and explains its renewal path in its guide to the next-gen Marketing Cloud, while Adobe quotes every Marketo edition privately.

Lead scoring and account-based marketing (ABM), where you market to named companies as a whole, sit in different editions on each side, and user ratings land within 0.2 points of each other. Whichever you pick, plan for 4 practical jobs: cleaning your data, building scores sales trusts, showing reps marketing activity and switching without losing history. Our short answer, as a Salesforce consulting partner, is that most Sales Cloud teams get more from Account Engagement, while Marketo earns its place when account tools and revenue reporting carry real weight in how you sell, or when your business data lives in custom objects.

Which Salesforce Product Are You Really Comparing to Marketo?

If you run Sales Cloud and you’re pricing Marketo, compare it with Marketing Cloud Account Engagement, because Salesforce’s other marketing products serve different jobs.

  • Salesforce Marketing Cloud: The umbrella name for Salesforce’s family of marketing products.
  • Marketing Cloud Account Engagement: The B2B tool formerly called Pardot. Salesforce announced the new name in April 2022, which is why people still search “Marketo vs Pardot.”
  • Marketing Cloud Engagement: Formerly ExactTarget. It’s built mainly for consumer (B2C) marketing and runs as a separate system from Sales Cloud.
  • Marketing Cloud Next: Unveiled at Salesforce’s Connections event in June 2025 and sold in Growth and Advanced Editions. Salesforce says new customers “can start with Marketing Cloud Growth Edition or Advanced Edition,” and Salesforce Ben describes Next as built on Data Cloud, Salesforce’s customer data platform, and run with AI agents.
  • Marketing Cloud+: How existing customers get the newer features. They renew into a “+” edition such as Engagement+ or Account Engagement+, and Salesforce says Account Engagement+ customers already have the next-gen features alongside their account.
  • Marketo Engage: Adobe’s B2B marketing automation product. It comes in 4 editions (Growth, Select, Prime and Ultimate), and every edition includes a built-in Salesforce connector.

Is Account Engagement going away? Salesforce hasn’t announced an end date. Salesforce Ben analyst Timo Kovala wrote in April 2026 that it’s “nearing the end of its shelf life,” so plan your renewal around the dates Salesforce puts in your contract, and ask your account executive directly about the product roadmap.

What Does Each B2B Marketing Automation Tool Do Day to Day?

Both tools capture leads, score them, nurture them and pass them to sales, and both handle email along with forms and landing pages. Where they differ is in how your team builds that work each day, and in which AI features you can use right now.

Marketo Engage

In Marketo, each campaign lives inside a program, which Adobe calls “a single marketing initiative.” Programs run on smart campaigns: a smart list picks who qualifies, and a flow sets what happens next, either on a schedule or the moment someone takes an action. Longer nurture tracks live in engagement programs that send emails “in order at a regular interval,” and Adobe’s current Marketo AI features help with writing emails, checking programs for mistakes, smarter lead imports and keeping content on brand.

Account Engagement

Account Engagement builds nurture tracks in Engagement Studio, where every step sends a prospect down a yes path or a no path. Trailhead, Salesforce’s training site, gives a simple example: if a prospect clicks a link, the program alerts their sales rep, and if not, it sends a second email. Automation rules, which run if-this-then-that actions on their own, come in set amounts (50 on Growth+, 100 on Plus+ and 150 on the top 2 editions), Growth+ allows 50 forms and landing pages while higher editions remove that cap, and Agentforce Campaign Creation, an AI helper for building campaigns, is included from Growth+.

Why Does Running Sales Cloud Change the Answer?

Your reps already work in Salesforce, so any marketing tool you add will either share those records or keep its own copy and sync it back. Salesforce’s State of Marketing report, now in its 10th edition, surveyed 4,450 marketing decision makers worldwide, so treat its numbers as a broad marketing view, and 2 findings point the same way: the fewer places your customer data lives, the faster your team can act on it.

  • Speed: 69% of marketers say they struggle to respond to customers quickly.
  • Connected data: Marketers happy with how connected their data is are 42% more likely to respond to customers regularly and 60% more likely to use AI agents.

Marketo keeps its own database of people, and that separate database is the reason someone on your team needs to keep an eye on the sync. In day-to-day practice, that means checking the sync status and error log on a regular schedule, and agreeing who fixes records that fail.

Account Engagement links each prospect to a Salesforce lead or contact, and Salesforce says it runs on the same platform and data as Sales Cloud. For a small team, that’s 1 less separate database to keep in step, though it also means your account setup and the contacts on each opportunity in Salesforce matter even more.

How Does the Marketo Salesforce Integration Move Your Data?

Marketo’s Salesforce sync runs all day, every day. Here’s how it works, per Adobe’s documentation.

  • Create a sync user. Like any Salesforce integration, Marketo connects through a Salesforce sync user with API access and access to leads, contacts, accounts and opportunities, plus campaigns if you sync them. Marketo only sees the fields that user can see.
  • Run the first sync. Marketo copies your whole Salesforce database, and Adobe warns this “may take hours or even days.”
  • Let the cycle repeat. Each sync “takes some time and then pauses for 5 minutes, then starts again.”
  • Know which way data flows. Leads and contacts update in both directions, and so do Salesforce campaigns. Accounts, opportunities, users, custom objects (extra kinds of records your team added to Salesforce) and activity only flow from Salesforce into Marketo, where they’re read-only.
  • Watch the API count. Each sync session uses 25 API calls, the individual requests one software system sends to another, according to Adobe’s notes on sync API usage. Salesforce Enterprise Edition accounts are usually fine, but more limited editions can hit their daily limit.
  • Check the error log. If a record is missing a required field or holds bad data, that record fails to sync, and Marketo notes the reason in the lead’s activity log.
  • Ask Support to change the timing. You can’t change the 5-minute pause yourself; Marketo Support has to do it.

For reps, Marketo Sales Insight is a Salesforce AppExchange package that brings Marketo features into Salesforce. When you brief your sales team, describe the sync as updates every few minutes, so reps know a new form fill can take a little while to show up. That short delay is normal for the Marketo Salesforce integration, so build your follow-up rules around it.

For a Sales Cloud team, the choice is Marketo Engage against Account Engagement, with Marketing Cloud Next in the mix if you’re a new Salesforce marketing customer. Marketing Cloud Engagement is built for consumer marketing, so most B2B teams can rule it out, and if Next is on your list, read up on Data Cloud first, because Next is built on it.

Marketo vs Pardot: The Differences That Still Matter After the Rename

Plenty of teams still frame this choice as “Marketo vs Pardot.” These 7 differences matter most once you’re on Sales Cloud.

  • Who wins a data clash. If someone edits the same record in both systems at once, Adobe’s rule is simple: “Marketo wins,” and it adds that such clashes are rare. Account Engagement uses field-level sync rules, so you choose, field by field, whether its value, the Salesforce value or the most recently updated record wins.
  • How campaigns connect. Marketo links 1 program to 1 Salesforce campaign through its program-to-campaign sync, and members and their statuses update both ways. Program costs flow into Salesforce, and members who aren’t in Salesforce yet get created there as leads.
  • How editions are set up. Marketo editions include 10 users on Growth and 25 on the others, and Adobe sets the rest of the price by quote. Account Engagement sizes by contacts, with 10,000 on Growth+, Plus+ and Advanced+ and 75,000 on Premium+.
  • What reps see. Marketo brings its features into Salesforce through the Marketo Sales Insight package. Account Engagement includes Engagement History dashboards for sales reps: 5 on Growth+, 10 on Plus+ and 20 on Advanced+ and Premium+.
  • Custom objects. Marketo includes 10 custom objects and 2 million records from Select up, at extra cost on Growth. If your business data lives in custom objects, ask Salesforce to demo Account Engagement against yours.
  • Attribution and reporting. Marketo Measure, Adobe’s tool for showing which campaigns drove revenue, is included only in Ultimate and costs extra below that. Account Engagement includes B2B Marketing Analytics, Salesforce’s reporting app for B2B marketing, from Plus+.
  • Multiple brands or teams. Marketo includes separate workspaces for different teams or brands in Prime and Ultimate, at extra cost below that. Account Engagement adds business units, separate setups for different brands or regions, from Advanced+, along with a dedicated IP address, so your email goes out from a server address you don’t share with other senders.

Count how many of these 7 differences touch work your team does every week, and raise those first on a vendor call. If only 1 or 2 of them matter to you, the published pricing and the closer connection to Sales Cloud usually tip the decision toward Account Engagement.

Where Does Each Platform Pull Ahead on Lead Scoring and ABM?

Lead scoring and ABM are where B2B teams feel the difference week to week.

Account Engagement and Marketing Cloud Next

  • Einstein Behavior Scoring gives every prospect a score from 0 to 100 that typically updates every 4 hours.
  • Behavior Scoring needs a year of engagement data, Salesforce recommends at least 20 prospects linked to opportunities, and first scores can take up to 48 hours to appear.
  • On the Salesforce side, Einstein Lead Scoring looks at past lead data to predict which leads will convert, and it keeps updating as new data comes in.
  • Paired with Behavior Scoring, it answers 2 questions: how interested the prospect is in you, and how interested you should be in them.
  • Growth+ includes lead nurturing and scoring, while AI-powered scoring and ABM start at Plus+.
  • Salesforce is adding tools for spotting buying groups, the set of people at one company who sign off on a purchase, through Agentforce, such as the Summer ’26 Account Nurturing Agent, so ask to see them in a demo first.

Marketo Engage

  • Target Account Management matches leads to the right accounts and builds lists of named target accounts.
  • It adds account-level personalization across channels and tracks an engagement score for each account, along with its effect on pipeline and revenue.
  • Prime and Ultimate include Target Account Management and AI-built audiences, and both cost extra on Growth and Select.
  • Scoring, routing and alerts come with every edition, according to Adobe’s packaging page.
  • Detailed journey reporting comes with Prime and Ultimate, at extra cost on Growth and Select.
  • Adobe lists AI program building, journey building, Callable Agents (AI helpers that run inside campaign steps) and an in-product AI assistant as “coming soon.”

Pick the setup your team would use every week, then price that exact edition. Ask each vendor to demo scoring on a sample of your own leads, so you see the scores your reps would get.

How Does Pricing Work for Each Option?

Salesforce publishes Account Engagement pricing and its other Marketing Cloud prices online, while Adobe asks you to request a quote for every Marketo Engage edition. You’ll budget the 2 differently, so the fairest comparison looks at what each price includes and what it leaves out.

What Usually Costs Extra

Account Engagement

4 editions with published monthly prices on a yearly contract

Here’s an example of how a 10,000-contact team that wants ABM would line up the 2 quotes it’s most likely to compare:

Budget Line

Account Engagement

Marketo Engage

Plus+, where AI-powered scoring and ABM start

Prime, where Target Account Management and AI-built audiences are included

What sets the size

On both sides, ask which paid support plan fits and who will do the setup. Then run both quotes through the same simple sum (the yearly license, plus add-ons, usage credits, paid support and setup), and if a quote comes back on a lower edition than the features you need, ask for a second one at the edition that includes them.

Which Platform Fits Your Team Profile?

Which Platform Fits Your Team Profile_

Your team’s shape decides the right B2B marketing automation setup. Find the profile that looks most like yours.

  • Small Sales Cloud team without ABM needs: Start with Account Engagement Growth+. It includes lead nurturing, scoring and Marketing Cloud Next Growth Edition, and you can step up to Plus+ when ABM becomes a priority.
  • ABM team selling to named accounts: Go with Account Engagement Plus+ if you want ABM and B2B reporting in 1 edition, or shortlist Marketo Ultimate if attribution through Marketo Measure is the deciding need.
  • Smaller Salesforce edition with a tight API limit: Favor Account Engagement, since the Marketo sync adds a steady daily load of API calls on top of everything else connected to your Salesforce account.
  • Business data held in custom objects: Shortlist Marketo Select or above. Those editions include 10 custom objects and 2 million records.
  • Team running webinars and events: Look closely at Marketo Select or above, and ask Salesforce to show its webinar options side by side. On Marketo, event and webinar marketing is included from Select, and Prime adds unlimited interactive webinars.
  • Budget needed before any sales call: Start with Account Engagement or Marketing Cloud Next. Both publish list prices, while Marketo is quote only.
  • Account Engagement customer at renewal: Renew into Account Engagement+. Salesforce says those customers already have next-gen features alongside their account, and no official end date has been announced.

If 2 profiles fit your team, let the one tied to your biggest weekly workload set the direction, and treat the other as a requirement for the quote.

The Renewal Checklist to Run Before You Sign Anything

Run this list before your renewal or vendor call, and you’ll walk in knowing your contact count and every feature you’d pay extra for.

  • Count your contacts. Compare your real number with the contact allowance in each Account Engagement edition.
  • Get a matched Marketo quote. Give Adobe the same contact count, user count and feature list you priced with Salesforce.
  • Check your daily API limit. Look up how many API calls your Salesforce edition allows before adding a synced tool.
  • Review the sync user. List the fields it can see, since hidden fields never sync.
  • Decide field ownership. Write down which system owns each key field before anything goes live.
  • Test lead scoring readiness. Confirm you have a year of engagement data and enough prospects tied to opportunities.
  • Turn on field history tracking. It’s Salesforce’s log of field changes, and Account Engagement needs it if you want the most recent edit to win on the opt-out field.
  • Map your programs. List every program that connects to a Salesforce campaign, since each one links 1 to 1.
  • Name a platform owner. Pick 1 person who owns the marketing platform and the sync after launch.
  • Price ABM in the right edition. Quote the edition where account tools are included on each side.
  • Price revenue reporting. Ask whether Marketo Measure or B2B Marketing Analytics is in your quote.
  • List your add-ons. Add content, analytics, SMS and WhatsApp add-ons to the running total.
  • Budget paid support. Ask what each paid support plan adds to the license fee.
  • Ask about Marketing Cloud+. Find out what renewing into a “+” edition changes for your Salesforce account.

A list with every box ticked turns the renewal call into a pricing conversation about your real setup, with the same inputs on both vendors’ quotes.

Common Challenges & Solutions

These 4 problems come up on both platforms, and each one has a practical fix.

  • Messy or duplicate records before launch. Duplicates and incomplete records break syncs, scoring and reports on either platform. The fix is to clean and test your data before the first sync. HyphenX’s approach: We clean duplicates first, check sample data before anything loads into Salesforce, and run test loads in a sandbox before going live.
  • Sales doesn’t trust the lead scores. When marketing and sales never agreed on what a good lead looks like, scores get ignored. Agree on that definition first, then build the scoring model around it. HyphenX’s approach: Our Account Engagement work starts with marketing and sales discovery, where we review campaigns and handoffs, and then moves into scoring model design.
  • Reps can’t see marketing activity. A strong nurture program won’t help much if reps never see who’s engaging. Give them a view inside Salesforce, such as Account Engagement’s Engagement History dashboards or the Marketo Sales Insight package, and show them how to use it. HyphenX’s approach: Our Account Engagement setups cover sync rules, scoring, user access and training, and we judge each project on adoption, performance and business impact along with delivery milestones.
  • Switching platforms without losing history. Moving between Marketo and Account Engagement means relinking programs to Salesforce campaigns, rebuilding scoring and, on Marketo, a long first sync. Plan it as its own Salesforce migration project with test runs and a fallback plan. HyphenX’s approach: We migrate teams from Marketo into Account Engagement, moving contact records, engagement history and campaign structures while keeping attribution history intact, and we back each move with dry runs, rollback plans and 30 days of close support after launch.

Raise all 4 while you’re still comparing tools, because each one is easier to plan for before the contract than after it.

B2B SaaS Client: From Swivel-Chair Prospecting to Single-Click Pipeline

A B2B SaaS company with sales development reps (SDRs) and account executives (AEs), backed by a small revenue operations team, used Sales Cloud as its main system, but its 3 prospecting tools (Apollo, Lusha and Hunter) didn’t connect to Salesforce, so reps copied contact data between browser tabs by hand. HyphenX Solutions connected all 3 inside Salesforce so the best data source gets checked first, added one-click buttons that fill in missing contact details on lead, contact and account records, checked every email address before it was saved, and set Einstein lead scoring and automatic routing to run on each new lead. The project also added an Agentforce agent that researches accounts and buying committees, plus handoffs from SDRs to AEs that carry full context.

Key takeaway: Clean, verified lead data inside Sales Cloud is what scoring and routing read, whichever marketing automation tool you pick.

FAQs: What B2B Buyers Ask About Marketo and Salesforce Marketing Cloud

Marketo vs Salesforce Marketing Cloud: which is better for B2B?

For B2B teams already on Salesforce, compare Marketo with Marketing Cloud Account Engagement, Salesforce’s B2B marketing automation product. Marketing Cloud Engagement is built mainly for consumer marketing and runs as a separate system. Account Engagement suits teams that want published pricing and field-by-field sync control, and Marketo suits teams that lean on its account tools or custom objects.

Is Pardot the same as Marketing Cloud Account Engagement?

Yes. Salesforce announced in April 2022 that Pardot would be renamed Marketing Cloud Account Engagement. So when people search “Marketo vs Pardot” today, they’re comparing Marketo Engage with Account Engagement. Existing Account Engagement customers can renew into Account Engagement+, which gives them access to next-gen Marketing Cloud features alongside their account.

Is Salesforce retiring Account Engagement?

Salesforce hasn’t announced a retirement or end-of-sale date for Account Engagement. In April 2026, Salesforce Ben analyst Timo Kovala wrote that it’s “nearing the end of its shelf life” because of Marketing Cloud Next. Base your plans on the dates and terms Salesforce puts in your renewal contract, since Salesforce hasn’t published an end date.

What is Marketing Cloud Next?

Marketing Cloud Next is Salesforce’s newer marketing product, unveiled at Salesforce Connections in June 2025. Salesforce Ben describes it as built on Data Cloud and run with AI agents. New customers can start on its Growth or Advanced Edition, both billed yearly, and Account Engagement Growth+ already includes the Growth Edition.

How much does Marketo Engage cost?

Adobe doesn’t publish Marketo Engage prices. Every edition, from Growth through Select and Prime to Ultimate, uses a “Get pricing” quote form. To compare fairly, ask Adobe to quote the same contact count, user count and features you priced with Salesforce, and confirm which features cost extra on Growth and Select.

How much does Account Engagement cost?

Salesforce publishes monthly list prices for all 4 editions (Growth+, Plus+, Advanced+ and Premium+) on its pricing page, billed on a yearly contract. The first 3 editions include 10,000 contacts and Premium+ includes 75,000. AI-powered scoring and ABM start at Plus+, and extras such as SMS and WhatsApp cost more.

How often does Marketo sync with Salesforce?

The Marketo Salesforce integration syncs all day. Each cycle takes some time, pauses for 5 minutes, then starts again, so changes arrive in small groups. You can’t change that timing yourself, because Marketo Support has to do it, and Adobe says a 30-minute cycle uses about 1,000 Salesforce API calls a day.

Which Salesforce objects sync both ways with Marketo?

Leads and contacts sync both ways, and so do Salesforce campaigns, including members and their statuses. Accounts, opportunities, users, custom objects and activity flow only from Salesforce to Marketo. Marketo links each program to 1 Salesforce campaign, and program members who don’t exist in Salesforce yet get created there as leads.

How many Salesforce API calls does the Marketo sync use?

Adobe says each sync session uses 25 API calls, which adds up to 7,200 calls a day at the default 5-minute timing. Records move in groups of up to 200 per call. Salesforce Enterprise Edition accounts are usually fine, but more limited editions can reach their daily limit, and only Marketo Support can stretch the timing.

What happens if a record changes in Marketo and Salesforce at the same time?

In Marketo, Adobe’s rule is short: “Marketo wins,” and Adobe adds that such clashes are rare. Account Engagement handles it field by field. You choose a sync rule for each field, such as keeping the Account Engagement value, keeping the Salesforce value or taking the most recently updated record, so you decide which system owns each value.

How does lead scoring work in Account Engagement?

Einstein Behavior Scoring gives each prospect a score from 0 to 100 based on how they engage. It needs a year of engagement data, and Salesforce recommends at least 20 prospects linked to sales opportunities. First scores can take up to 48 hours and then typically update every 4 hours. AI-powered scoring is included from Plus+.

Do both platforms support account-based marketing?

Yes. Account Engagement includes account-based marketing from the Plus+ edition. Marketo’s Target Account Management matches leads to accounts and tracks an engagement score for each account, and Adobe’s packaging page includes it in Prime and Ultimate, with extra cost on Growth and Select. Salesforce is also adding buying-group tools to Marketing Cloud Next.

Which platform do users rate higher?

As of October 2026, Marketo Engage rates slightly higher. G2 shows 4.1 out of 5 from 3,334 reviews for Marketo and 4.0 from 4,850 reviews for Account Engagement. Gartner Peer Insights shows 4.4 from 626 reviews and 4.2 from 712. Account Engagement has more reviews on both sites, and the gap is small enough that fit should lead.

How long does a move from Marketo to Account Engagement take?

It depends on your data volume, number of programs, scoring model and integrations. For a new setup, HyphenX says a standard B2B Account Engagement implementation typically runs 6 to 10 weeks, and a move from Marketo adds data and program work on top. Keep your old scoring running until the new scores look right.

Do existing Marketing Cloud customers have to migrate to get Marketing Cloud Next features?

Salesforce says existing customers get the newer features by renewing into Marketing Cloud+, such as Account Engagement+ or Engagement+. Account Engagement+ customers already have next-gen features alongside their account. For Engagement customers, Salesforce Ben reports Salesforce describing the move toward Next as a gradual coming together of products, so plan it as a project.
